I hope you are proud of yourself for drawing a cartoon that will unquestionably be reprinted on anti-semitic, radical islamic and white supremacist websites for years to come. The best that can be said about it is that it is inflammatory and biassed. the truth is, it is just plain antisemitic.

As a political cartoon, it’s excellent. It meets all the requirements for creating symbols and communicating a message. It’s one more nail of delegitimization. Of course, we’ll ignore the Hammas goal of eliminating Israel; we’ll just expect Israel to fade quietly into history. Bpaulwhite is right: this will become a new classic of anti-Semitism cartooning and will be joyfully reproduced. Why couldn’t the Germans have been more efficient?

Packer, you made a good point regarding the elements of a political cartoon. However, this one seems to be overkill with so-called “symbolism”. I don’t get many of the aspects of what Oliphant is trying to depict, except for showing Israel as a monstrous country…oh, and let’s not forget the religious aspect with the Star of David…country/religion…Hmmm…who took out the World Trade Center and innocent people in Mumbai and so on and so on….Must be a country that eludes me…or is it fanatical zealots that love to be incited by a “cartoon” like this one. Sorry, I don’t get it!

BPW – The names Israel and Gaza themselves are inflammatory.

The way you put it, there’s no difference between being anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli? I certainly have no issues with the Jews but Israeli policies bug the cr@p out of me.

Perhaps the pendulum of American opinion is now swinging against the Israeli far right. I was and am sympathetic with Israel in that no country can or should tolerate being rocketed on a daily basis. However, the pressure cooker that is Gaza is entirely the result of Israel’s past polices. The charge of Antisemitism and the shared collective guilt for the Holocaust just does not have the same relevance to me anymore.

The Nazis wanted to wipe out all Jews, homosexuals, Gypsies, the mentally challenged, among others. Israel is defending itself against a group that is recognized as a terrorist organization by the US, European Union and most of the world. I think the difference is quite clear.

Balfour and Peel Commission both called for Arab AND Jewish “homelands”. The tactics of the current Israeli “right-wing leadership” is on display, but not necessarily the feelings of all Israelis, just like bin Laden is in no way all Arabs, or Muslims.

Show me a population incapable of prejudice or brutality, and I can assure you it isn’t “human”.

Even cartoonists can be brainwashed by the media. Let’s see 20% of the world is Muslim, .01% is Jewish. The news media makes the most $ pandering to whom? Grow up and open your eyes. When you are surrounded 100:1 by those trying to kill you daily, you will do whatever it takes to survive. Remember England killed 40,000 civilians in 2 days in the bombing Dreseden 12 days before the Nazi surrender. War is war. Grow up. Don’t expect Israel to eat daily bombing and do nothing. The “occupation”; that the Arabs speak of is the existence of Israel. The Jews have been the predominant group in Israel for 3,000 years. The Arabs have never controlled it. You can’t give something back to someone who never had it. The powder keg in Gaza is the direct result of Egypt’s refusal to accept Gaza as Egypt for fear of the Muslim Brotherhood’s control. Israel never wanted Gaza or the West Bank, but neither did Egypt or Jordan. Jordan slaughtered 100,000 Palestinians for fear of an uprising prior to the ‘67 war. We never heard any outrage from that. It is ok if Muslims kill Muslims.

The Israeli Government made a big mistake many years ago.
They expected the Palestinians to live peacefully in their ghettos the way the Jews did through most of European history.
If the Palestinians aren’t sufficiently grateful for being allowed to live within Israel after their homes have been taken from them, they MUST be evil.

If I built my house on my neighbor’s land, we would not have peace between us. If I held up delivery of food, prevented my neighbor from selling his produce until it was rotten, and restricted his movement on his own property, we would not have peace between us. The Jews are a wonderfully inventive people. They must find a better way to make peace with their neighbors than by dropping cluster bombs in their neighborhoods.

It is neither anti-semitic nor anti-Israel to want and expect better from the state of Israel. While I find this comic rather provocative, criticizing Israel’s actions is perfectly legitimate.

JF88, this is not cursing Abraham either. Oliphant is expressing his disgust with Israel’s actions over against Gaza – agree or disagree, it’s not evil.

    Let’s try this again…
Close your eyes and imagine a group, connected to the Mexican government or not, firing rockets from Juarez Mexico into El Paso Texas. After a day or two even a nice guy like Mr. Obama is going to have to do something. He warns them but they say they are willing to die and are not afraid of the big bully. Days go by and rockets are falling all over that part of Texas forcing people to sleep in bomb shelters. After another few days Mr Obama says he has had enough and says he will have to send his troops in if it doesn’t stop. The rockets increase and they say they have no intention of stopping and it’s America’s fault.
When the troops and jets finally move in and are met with fierce resistance, how many innocent Mexicans would die? A thousand? In the first 10 minutes.
The panicked people would then rush to the US border to get away from the craziness but guess what? The border would be sealed!
By the way the rockets are still falling on Israel but that doesn’t seem to matter. Only Israeli bombs are worth mentioning.

Israel had thousands of rockets shot at it for years with diplomatic efforts and threats yielding no results. The Israeli army expended an unprecedented effort to avoid civilian casualties according to Richard Kemp, BBC military analyst. This cartoon comparing Israelis to Nazis is obscene. It hurts Jews to compare them to a group that systematically tried to destroy them, and delegitmizes the Israeli government.

When will Jews recognise the fact that one can be anti Israeli and not be anti Semetic? There is a difference! I dislike Israel’s policies on Palestine as much as I do Mugabe’s policies in Zimbabwe which does not make me anti African or racist This comic is incredibly courageous and so spot on! Also, from what source did the figure of Jews being 0.04% of the world’s population come? The continued use of the holocaust of 60+ yrs ago for justification of Israel’s current policies just makes many desensitised and holds very little sway these days.

I’m not a Jew, but I thought the Star of David had 5 points not 6. He’s making a political comment. If people think it is a stereotype, then there is probably a reason. If I was a cartoonist and could draw, I would draw a penny being squeezed by a person wearing a yarmulke until it dropped blood. That is a typical stereotype.

Jackskuatt says trying to kill you daily. I guess Jackskuatt will have you believe that the Israelis treat the Palestinians and their neighbors with loving care. The Israelis harrass and attack the Palestinians on a daily 24/7 basis. Id consider that even worse than the poor people living in the desert that get a rocket slung at their cows. Have you ever watched Palestinian fisherman being harrassed by Israeli navy gunboats being shot at with high caliber machine guns off their bows or being smashed against the bulk heads by high pressure water cannons while they scream and cry that they are only fishermen? No of course you wont mention that because it doesnt suit your purposes. Go and do a google search for Gaza water cannons under videos. The Israelis not only harrass them thy also want to slowly starve and kill them off slowly. Who is trying to kill who?
The world is tired of your Hasbara and now its brought to America since we have been blind enough to support the state of Israel with its lies. Thankfully Americans are finally seeing the true story of who and what is bringing unrest in the middle east.

While I, a wholly unrepentant pantheist, would dearly love to believe that there’s some remarkably just and infinitely wise potentate residing in the hidden folds of multi-dimensional space-time who regards the latest shenanigans of Israel as a blasphemy upon His laws and a mockery of everything He holds dear, I nonetheless fear I must resign myself to merely being wholeheartedly disgusted and thoroughly saddened by what amounts to yet another tiresome example of humanity acting on no higher level than swarms of bacteria or colonies of fungus ceaselessly struggling to wrest control of additional patches of territory atop a smoldering pile of festering refuse; and while there are indeed many deluded simpletons among us who may willfully believe in the existence of wondrously magical books whose hallowed words tell of great and powerful wizards who harbor grand designs for those fortunate races whom He favors and diabolical tortures for those whom He relentlessly abhors, it is simply a doleful fact for those who happen to see reality in less medievally-tinged colors that those Jews who refuse to acknowledge the swinish brutality and despotic ruthlessness with which their adapted state carried out their splendidly effective little “operation” to terrorize and intimidate a subject population driven to the heights of desperation by the hopelessness of their collective situation under the weight of transparently colonialistic policies are, despite their vociferous and self-aggrandizing insistence to the contrary, simply Jews who are not very distinguishable from the general run of humanity which, as but a momentary glance at any daily newspaper will inform you, are often no more than semi-refined baboons at best and outright blood-swilling demons at worst. The only matter I may happen to disagree with Oliphant upon in this instance is that he seems to imply that Israel, by pursuing its blindly militaristic policies, is bound to topple into the same abyss it is now chasing the hapless Gazans into; I harbor no such sentimental or moralistic bias: wholesale slaughter of enemy populations has always been a profoundly useful and eminently respectable element of statecraft since the very dawn of “civilization”. Don’t believe me? Ask a certified expert in the field like Henry Kissinger or Donald Rumsfeld - they’ll be more than happy to set you straight - or kill you - dependent, of course, upon just how useful you may be to them at any particular moment…

Typical anti-semitism. What terrorists most want us to see are the burning bodies of the victims of their own terror while blaming it on Israel. The terrorists living in Gaza and the West Bank hide behind women and children while launching rockets at innocent Israelis and then blame the Israeli gov’t for retaliating. Typical of someone uniformed or who is anti-semitic. Another score for the terrorists.

There are those who consider criticism of Zionism, that is those who seek a ‘greater Israel’ including the expulsion of the Palestinian people, as anti-semitism. They are not in the rational mainstream, and are generally both Christian and Jewish fundamentalist hard-liners- my way or the highway absolutists. Mearsheimer and Walt, the authors of “The Israel Lobby,” have shown that it is possible to criticize Israeli policy without being anti-semitic.
Perhaps Mr. Oliphant could have used another symbol in his editorial cartoon, but it is not anti-semitic. Visual impact is important in his media, and he gets the point across effectively.
The new Israeli leaders (and those who put them in office) have clearly forgotten the lessons of the Holocaust. Sometimes the truth is a bitter pill to swallow.
