The Marine Mammal Protection Act makes it difficult to get permission to keep an elephant seal.
By the way, the “lolrus” was a southern elephant seal. They’re the ones you can see on YouTube attacking parked cars. The ones on the beaches of California’s central coast are northern elephant seals.

I had the opportunity to visit San Nicholas Island (“Island of the Blue Dolphins”) when the elephant seals were there with their babies. A fascinating experience, but Mom’s reasons should have included “huge” and “dangerous”. I was able to get very close, but there was a concrete barrier between us and the seals, and I was very glad for it when a territorial dispute broke out between a couple of the males. They could easily kill a human stupid enough to get in their way.

I wish we could arrest parents for that. I admire her. Most would have gone “Yes and here is an AK47 you wanted for being a good boy and not killing us in our sleep.”
I watched a 16 year old call his mother a bitch and a whore because HE failed the driving test. His mother took every bit of it trying to console him.
My mother would have beat me to the edge of death THEN reminded me my father was coming home soon for something like that.

Veteran, of course she wouldn’t have because, I’m guessing, WAY before you were sixteen she would have given you to understand that YOU DON"T SPEAK TO ANYONE LIKE THAT, STARTING WITH YOUR PARENTS! I’ve seen similar things from even younger children and I don’t get how parents who indulge like that don’t see what monsters they’re unleashing.

    Exactly. It starts young.
This teen obviously had the upper hand with a mother who lost control years ago.
And he was a big kid. Much bigger than her so I could see some bully in him obviously.
Still I wanted to go over and knock that chip off his shoulder so quick and then see what fight is in him. But then I would have probably have to fight mom too while she was protecting her “child”.

I think in this dictionary most definitions would be ‘no’.

Being from an Irish Catholic family, I once made the mistake of yelling “JESUS CHRIST!” when I tripped over something, and my mother who was in the kitchen at the time, came running down the hall toward me with a windup that would have made Nolan Ryan jealous and knocked me clear out onto the front porch.of the house.

My father who was sitting on the couch watching the baseball game on TV just looked up momentarily, shook his head and went back to watching the game without saying a word.

Needles to say, I did not become a repeat offender.

    Ahhh….yes…..but they were great days.
Just mind your P’s and Q’s.
My mother was faster than a snake strike. Her favorite was the back hand. She never lifted her hand to strike instead she shot it out faster than Ali.
I remember complaining about something she had cooked and it was awful tasting. I said “This is terrible!” My next memory was “Why am I on the floor?” I learned to sit across the table from Mom not beside. I never saw the hand but later saw the red marks on the side of my face including her wedding ring imprint.
Damn I thought she is quick.
Never complained again at least out loud.

Verne needed the dictionary? I guess he understood perfectly but didn’t know how to explain it to his friends. Socially, he sure is slow to learn.
