Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle is an avowed independent who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message that has broad appeal. "I approach my work with a healthy skepticism for the ideological extremists littering our political landscape," explains Anderson.

I love the fact that people are not screaming about the blatant profiteering by the Oil Companies!
The gasoline you are buying today was created from crude that went into the refineries no less then 6 weeks ago! So, they are making much higher profits on oil that was purchased at a much lower price! The price spike caused by the fire should not hit the consumers for 5-6 weeks at minimum.
Of course, if the price of crude drops suddenly, THEN the companies will bring out the explanation about the 6 week lead time to explain why they can’t drop the price until all the older crude has been processed, and refined.
they hope most people won’t notice that the explanation, and the price adjustments only seem to work in one direction!

The Richmond refinery was built around 1900 and has blown up several times. I lived near and knew people who worked there.

The gas prices started going up, THREE HOURS after they announced the fire!! As masterskrain noted: there is a long delay from the time gasoline is REFINED til it gets to pumps. When oil wells have a problem, the same thing happens with gas prices, and it might take SIX MONTHS or MORE, before that oil from the well would be refined. OIL COMPANIES determine price, based on what THEY FIGURE, the “market will bear”, and have done so for decades.

Gas prices go up like a rocket. They come down like a parachute.

When gas prices go up, and there is a Republican president, Fox ‘News’ says it’s all because of supply and demand. When gas prices go up and Obama is president, Fox ‘News’ says it’s because of his policies.

But last decade, it was because Bush and Cheney were raising prices to line their own pocket. Now, it’s because Bush and Cheney are raising prices to line their own pockets. Oh, great! I’ve found one thing libs are consistent on. It’s always Bush’s fault.

^ I don’t remember mentioning either Bush or Cheney. I made reference to Fox ‘News’ version of ‘fair and balanced’.

As for the part about gas prices going up quickly on speculation and down very slowly because downward changes ‘have to work their way through the system’, that part is true and it is because of concentration in the industry. Otherwise, price changes would be equally responsive in both directions.

no but Obama EPA that he said he was going to use to bankrupt coal might have something to do with no new refiners

@masterskrain
What profiteering? They are taking the risks and coming up with dry wells. When they succeed the government is there to get their cut.
Only liberals scream when a business makes money.

I’m starting to think that everything is braindead’s fault.

It’s called the “long con”, and been going on a long time. The days of dry wells ended a long time ago. And, by the way, the government provides a lot of the data to them.

Wow! When Gas Prices went up due to refinery fires when Bush was President, the Left blamed Bush for raising prices to help his rich oil buddies,

@braindead08
Not true! The day after Katrina, Gas Prices spiked. Hours after the refinery fire started gas prices increased. It takes longer for prices to drop than it does for them to increase.

One might, just MIGHT be able to draw a slightly different observational fact with regard to Bush and Cheney in discussing the ripoffs by the oil companies: THEY ARE THE OIL COMPANIES! Halliburton, Arbusto, and all the other links to the "friendly’ rules they literally re-wrote to benefit their friends in the industry, notably in 2007 with regard to offshore drilling which directly allowed BP to get away with working WITH HALLIBURTON, and “do it on the cheap”, which led to the Gulf blowout.
