Pardon my confusion on not understanding why our government objects to an autonomous region having a referendum on what country it wishes to be affiliated with. It seems we are objecting to the Crimean people democratically deciding their future.

Back in the ‘90s, Russia signed a treaty that it would defend the ’95 borders of the Ukraine. Russia is now in clear violation of that treaty.

Why can’t they be more like the US, which has NEVER broken a treaty? When the US promised the Native Americans they could keep their ancestral lands as long as the grass grew and the rivers ran, the US Calvary always waited until winter, when the grass wasn’t growing and the rivers were frozen before initiating their campaigns to exterminate all the Native Americas, so the US was in full compliance with that treaty.

And the US had to modify the English language to remain in full compliance with the Geneva Convention, but the US has every legal right to do whatever it likes with the English language (since Eric Blair is no longer alive to complain about it).

I can understand that Russia is in violation of that treaty by occupying Crimea, but I consider as a separate issue that our government objects to a referendum within Crimea at the behest of the Crimean people (seemingly) and authorized by the Crimean government.

While it may be a semi-autonomous region, Crimea is still a part of Ukraine. Should the people of Texas take a referendum about becoming a part of Mexico?

Texas is not a semi-autonomous region. Scotland is a semi-autonomous region of Great Britain yet we don’t have any objections to Scotland’s voting for Independence.

The Ukrainian constitution says that a state wanting to secede requires a vote by all Ukrainians. Putin has the “vote” rigged, in that the Crimeans have two choices – annex to the Sov… er, Russian state, or be an “independent” satellite of the Russian State. They advertise pro-Ukrainian votes as being fascist (with Nazi flags), and intimidation of those who do not agree has been going on.
