    Most vikings were farmers. One of the more interesting bits of history is that Greenland was actually green when the vikings moved there. They farmed for about 400 years. The advancing ice of the Little Ice Age and the arrival of the Innuit forced them out around 1350. The areas where they farmed are now too cold to farm, being “permafrost.” (If it’s only 600 or so years old, does it make it “semipermafrost”?)

    He’ll get really inspired when he reads about King Alfred the Great, though I hope he’s not at Liz’s house when she goes out on a vet call and she asks him to mind the cakes in the oven.
