Change for change sake is the worst reason ever to change. Some things don’t change. Roaches, dragonflies, platypus don’t need to change.

If nothing ever changed, how would marketers convince us to buy the latest gadget we don’t know we needed?

Computer icons designed to look like the real world (such as the stitched leather in the old Calendar app) is called skeuomorphic. Apple’s top designer, Jonathan Ive, decided skeuomorphism had run its course, and he flattened, undetailed, and desaturated everything. Part of this was because all that prettiness takes up a chunk of your datastream and slows down responsiveness in handheld devices, and he was trying to free up bandwidth for more important stuff. Part of it was just because he could. But, as noted above, part of it was so they could sell new stuff to people who just had to have the latest, greatest thing.

Computer programmers need to keep changing things to try to justify their employment, otherwise they become overpaid maintenance workers. With manufacturers it’s all about getting consumers to buy the newest and latest toys.

Platipi? Really? I remember doing crap like this when I was a Sophomore at SUNY. Of course that was in 1963. (At least he didn’t say “platapusses”!)

Also, change keeps others off balance, which is a way of holding power. And Ralph Nader said change discourages counterfeiting.

If something is changed 100 times there’s a good chance that one of the changes might actually be an improvement.
