It seems to me we have a lot of similarities with the Roman Republic, and the transition to the Roman Empire. How do you folks feel with the likes of Chaney or the Kochs as Nero or Caligula? I don’t see much liklihood of any good coming of that sort of thing.

USA transition from democratic republic to neocon empire = Roman transition from oligarchic republic to Caesarian empire.
    π
We’ve been down this road before. My position is that the USA transition merges the Roman transition analogy with the FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (in the Latin west). Rome did them one at a time, separated by 500 years. We’re doing both at the same time.
    π
Folks, wake up! We ain’t got 500 more years. Everything is speeded up and merged together.

We’ve already got “cases” like Guard SGT saying, America isn’t a democracy; it’s a republic. He’s never heard of a democratic republic. But facts don’t matter to a “case” like that one.

I “actually, sincerely believe it IS about fraud”, among a lot of other things. Like the Dubya-Condoleeza team lying about WMDs in order to drag us into a disastrous war with Iraq (for its oil, which BTW we’re not getting, not in the way the neocons “sincerely believed” at the time).
    π
I hasten to add, not voter fraud, but other fraud: Like the fraudulent Wall Street financial oppression of the American people.

As a poll watcher I saw a voter turned away who was trying to use another person’s name. He was actually turned away, by a Democrat election judge, 3 times. She told him to bring some identification. The reason she knew he was using someone else’s name is the whose name he was trying to use had already voted.

The reason he was trying to use other names to vote? It didn’t have anything to do with party affilliation for him. Instead, he wanted to collect the $5 per person voting straight Democrat ticket that was being paid by the county Democrat party.

Historically, republics normally devolve into dictatorships. But think of how privileged we are. How many people get to watch a society collapse in their lifetime? The old Romans were the last ones to see their society collapse, and it took them a couple of centuries

USA transition merges the Roman transition analogy with the FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (in the Latin west).”

The analogy works well with 4th century AD Empire. Late 300s. Massive military expenditures. Nobility immune from all taxation. Urban middle class wrung dry. Poverty proliferating everywhere.

Nobility at work building defensible country estates. Forerunner of the medieval castle.

“If GW Bush was Caligula Jr, Obama is Septimus Severus.”

GW Bush is more akin to a Commodus, I would say.

Obama (in DT’s ‘speeded-up’ version) is more of a Julian the Apostate – not in any religious sense – but in the sense of a reformer, making a valiant effort to turn the tide, but eventually overwhelmed by the relentless momentum of the Decline.
