Calvin is a clever kid with a vivid imagination. A typical public school is failing him completely. He needs to be in a science magnet school that challenges him.

School definitely fails bright kids who don’t fit into the round holes. Though I think Calvin has a lot more to with Bill Watterson’s Inner Child than any real children.

Did that on my first day of Grade 5. Needless to say, set the tone for the whole year.

Kind of like when Joe Wilson yelled, “liar” on the House floor.

In panel 3, Calvin is literally opening his big mouth. Perhaps Bill Watterson drew a bit of inspiration from The Muppets with that one, since Calvin’s head looks like a Muppet head with the big mouth. Also Lucy from Peanuts.

Today’s strip is at least the second time that speaking the truth has set Calvin “free:”

@Paula R. Stiles I think that Bill is one of the rare people that can remember what our thought processes were like at that age. When you look at your kids, or grand kids and wonder what could they be thinking? I’m sure that Bill has represented that scenario at one time or another in Calvin and Hobbes.True story. My son was hit by a car while bike riding at age 6. His comment afterwards was that while he was airborne and flying over some bushes that he felt like Superman. That kind on comment could have come straight out C and H.
