Barkeater Lake is a season comic strip that follows the life of NYC resident Delores Tanzini, a recent divorcee who finds herself contemplating a move to the rural Adirondack mountain town of Barkeater Lake. Each 22 week season will focus on the next stumble of her decent into small town madness.

I think Corey commented once that this was his favorite strip in the series to draw.

Comes to mind that in our jam sessions of the ’70’s (before Karaoke) that some hopeful would creep up to us and ask if she could sing “I Am Woman” (?) “What?” “Never heard of it” and worse retorts from us..
“it’s by Helen Reddy”…
Oh. who’s she?
We’d mull over what we knew of Helen and come up with nothing.
“not even ’You’re my world?” and the kid would swing her hips and hum something unrecognizable to convince us that it was something we could make her a singing star.
She’d later come back with something more recognizable by the crowd and her girlfriends (there to give her courage) and the night would go a lot better after that.
Then some Anus invented the Karaoke, and life for real live musicians became very grim. .

Very Grim.
Have you ever sat through an afternoon’s celubrications at the local Club/Elks/Moose//Legion/VFW/wedding/birthday where the “Live Entertainment” is ‘Bill and Sandy’ “The hurricanes of BEST ENTERTAINMENT !!” ??
(in small print: Karaoke)
They moan and groan through a few numbers, and turn it over to ‘open mike’ and get back to drinkin’?
GHAAAHHH!!!
THEN the fun begins when the first of the worst paw through the catalogues, pick out their CD and try to entertain us with the same ol’ sad songs they’ve done since the invention of Karaoke.. Enough to drive a man to drink.. Oh, wait.. that’s what the cheap bar is for…. Ah, life in the North Country…

You could have got away with “Whatever turns your crank, Banks.”
