I didn’t intend to look it up, was just thinking about how one should expect her grandmother to sing without musical accompaniment late at night.
    -
    Oh, well:
    .

    O Death by Ralph Stanley
    O, Death
    O, Death
Won’t you spare me over ‘til another year
Well what is this that I can’t see
With ice cold hands takin’ hold of me
Well I am death, none can excel
I’ll open the door to heaven or hell
    Whoa, death someone would pray
Could you wait to call me another day
The children prayed, the preacher preached
Time and mercy is out of your reach
I’ll fix your feet ‘til you cant walk
I’ll lock your jaw ‘til you cant talk
I’ll close your eyes so you can’t see
This very air, come and go with me
I’m death I come to take the soul
Leave the body and leave it cold
To draw up the flesh off of the frame
Dirt and worm both have a claim
    O, Death
    O, Death
Won’t you spare me over ‘til another year
My mother came to my bed
Placed a cold towel upon my head
My head is warm my feet are cold
Death is a-movin’ upon my soul
Oh, death how you’re treatin’ me
You’ve close my eyes so I can’t see
    Well you’re hurtin’ my body
    You make me cold
You run my life right outta my soul
Oh death please consider my age
Please don’t take me at this stage
My wealth is all at your command
If you will move your icy hand
Oh the young, the rich or poor
    Hunger like me you know
No wealth, no ruin, no silver no gold
Nothing satisfies me but your soul
    O, death
    O, death
Won’t you spare me over ‘til another year
Won’t you spare me over ‘til another year
Won’t you spare me over ‘til another year

Those death masks were cool; to see the people as they were, not some drawing or painting.(See Susan’s link. Just in case you’re wondering what I am babbling about.)

Thanks for the link, I didn’t realize that song came from O Brother, where art thou?
Liked it better with the full Klan march.
(Hate the KIan, but artistically it was a great scene.)

Did it come from that movie?
Or was it just used by that movie?
Dr. Ralph was born in 1927 and had been singing a long time before that movie was conceived.

No wonder Agnes tries so hard to get into another place of the mind.

…my mother used to read old grimm fairy tales to us, and end with “and here comes a candle to light you to bed, and here comes a chopper to chop off your head.” Then she’d say goodnight, and turn off the lights and close the door. We’d have the covers over our heads all night, afraid to come out….good times, good times… :)

thanks for the link. The feel of the song fits well with the movie “Oh Brother Where Art Thou”. And the death masks were amazing.
    .
and perhaps its the only lullaby Granma knows. Either that or grannie has a wicked sense of humour.

nightmares are fun if you don’t take them seriously. I had one the other night about a pit bull foaming at the mouth. It irritated me that I awakened ere I found out how it turned out.

My wife wanted me to tell our sons the Cinderella story one evening. When I got to the part where the step-mother was trying to make the feet fit the slipper by carving off the toes of one step-sister and the heel of the other, she was aghast.
    -
I didn’t know there was a less bloody version out there.
