Hello! I'm the cartoonist behind 'Breaking Cat News!' I enjoy illustrating, cartooning, baking, antique shops, old-timey detective shows, and anything with avocados. Wife, mother, cat lover. One day I hope to be a little old lady who rides around town on her bicycle solving mysteries.

Hello Kaylin, I saw this comment a few days ago while I was locked out of my account. I could not comment or like, but I was still peeking in to read. Like others here, I also missed the original comment. But I also admire you taking the moment to reflect and apologize. And please—especially as I navigate my own feelings of sadness, loss, and anger in my own divorce right now—know all is forgiven. Those feelings come up suddenly and unexpectedly. It’s truly grief. Here’s to the dreams we had for ourselves, the lives we tried to make in good faith, and here’s to a hope that tomorrow brings comfort, new dreams, and unexpected joys.

HELLO EVERYONE!! I’m sorry I have been missing from the comments for a bit! I managed to somehow lock myself out from my account (a reoccurring theme… just lucky I guess, lol! Many thanks to the tech folks at GoComics for getting me back in). And then on top of that, the kids and I caught norovirus last week! WHEW! That was NOT GREAT, lol! A week of classic strips are coming in the near future, because I had to take the week to care for the Girl, the Boy, and then myself. Thankfully, we’re all recovered! I’m delighted to be back here in the comments, and glad so many of you enjoyed this Sunday strip. It was so much fun to paint! Happy Sunday!

This storyline absolutely wrecked me as a kid… and showed me how good and moving storytelling in comics could truly be.

I realized in writing this strip a couple of weeks ago (and trying to fit in “doomed” somewhere, but having no luck) that I can’t believe I missed the opportunity to do a “first robin of spring” strip LAST year and have the robin warn that they were doomed (ahead of the mole wars!) What would have been a fun nod here could also have doubled as a realization later and ahhhhh, how did I miss that?! Lol!!

(I may have to add one when the book version of that story arc comes together!)

I want to thank everyone for the support this week during BCN’s real life tiny news broadcast, straight from the scene of the funny pages. Thank you for your words of encouragement, for sharing this with people and reaching out to your newspapers, and for the enthusiasm you have shown myself and my colleagues! I still have high hopes that this can be corrected and women can be brought back into other newspapers that dropped us. And if not, I’ve read through many of your comments about a discrimination case (and had several attorneys reach out to me since the Washington Post article dropped) and I agree that may be inevitable. In addition to my own legal talks, I’ll support any action the syndicates, newspapers, NCS, or other cartoonists take to hold these companies accountable for wiping out the women cartoonists from their pages. Something will be figured out. There’s no option where Americans accept that nearly 350 newspapers host less than 2% comics credited to women in 2024. If Gannett is waiting for that to be their easy answer, that’s not it. It’s especially not it when mega-sellers like Dana Simpson were dropped, and humbly myself, Will Henry, and Steenz, all of whom also sell plenty of books and have a strong readership in schools.

…To quote Thimblefist, “It will be ok, because we will make it ok.”

Thank you for supporting Tabitha and Baba Mouse (and me) speak up this week. I was very anxious at the start of the week and so many of you were amazingly kind and supportive. Let’s hope folks heard us!! On Monday we return to our regularly scheduled programming!

I very much believe if Charles Schulz was alive today he would have been talking about this and trying to help us. <3
