Oh, I agree that you gave Charles some great references for past looks for Lizz from the Gould canon. I am very impressed by your ready access to such resources. I was just reacting to the one specific example you gave, which struck me as on the one hand certainly classic Lizz, but on the other hand not Gould’s best work.
And perhaps I am somewhat more tolerant of a new artist’s new style if that new style is well executed. The most recent case in point is “Heart of the City”: I still very much miss Tatulli’s distinctive style, but I also have grown to respect and enjoy the distinctive new style introduced by Steenz. (On the other hand, I would have to admit that no one else has quite managed to fill Ernie Bushmiller’s shoes on “Nancy”.)
I, for one, very much like Charles’ style in this strip—the reactions in P3 are great—and I have to say that I have never been fond of the way Gould would often depict a nose as simply two disembodied airholes in the middle of the face.
I do believe that “the boss” here bears more than a passing resemblance to certain depictions (both photos and courtroom sketches) of the erstwhile publisher of the National Enquirer—grey hair and mustache, high forehead, metal-rimmed glasses, and yellow tie.
