“Where, say some, is the King of America? In America the law is king. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other.” ~ Thomas Paine
Actually they DID worry about someone like Trump. They had stops built in, which they thought would work against demagogues and subsequent tyrants. The three legs of government was one stop. It doesn’t seem to be working as well right now. Another stop laid down by the Founding Fathers was the way in which candidates were selected for the general election and the college of electors. This stop has been completely revamped, some of it good and some of it a toss up. Party primaries were never considered by the Founding Fathers and that is the way in for demagogues.
As of 04/26/2024, the conservative justices on the Supreme Court appear to be seriously considering Trump’s claim of immunity. So much for constitutional originalism.
The originalists and textualists on the Court, based on their questions, did not want to deal with the issue of Trump, so they made up hypotheticals, which with respect to Trump were actually not hypotheticals. Their efforts to cloud the issue by trying to separate out ‘official’ from ‘private’ acts only broadcast their republican biases and efforts to shield Trump. This puts an exclamation point on their rewrite of the the 14th Amendment in the Colorado decision. Roberts himself exposed his court’s plot to shield Trump as much as possible when he dissed the finely written Appellate decision. It’s also noteworthy that the overtly corrupt Thomas, whose wife has been involved with Trump’s efforts, did not recuse from this case or the Colorado case. The Roberts Court has zero legitimacy, since they are now publicly proclaiming their unobjective political decisions and their unwillingness to enforce any real ethics code.
One of the first priorities of the Nazi Party after it took power in Germany was to target judges in order to subvert the justice system. A number of our conservative don’t have to be targeted. They meekly and/or willingly are aiding and abetting.
George Washington was offered a monarchy’s position. He chose the presidency because we had just fought a brutal revolution to get rid of the king. We all need to vote blue in November to keep the democratic republic our forefathers set up.
Dear SNL…how about a skit where Trump becomes POTUS back in 1800s? How long before someone challenges the Billionaire Bully from Bronx to a duel for disparaging their wife? He would have had bone spurs during the war for independence. 100% would have had slaves. His crops would have failed and he would whine and complain. Couldn’t ride a horse, need a carriage because he’s definitely not 215#. He’d love the wigs of the day.

Matt we agree on many things. But in this case I think “malignant narcissist” is the more likely description over megalomaniac.
Hopefully we can get through this disagreement like mature adults.

Our fore fathers did not fight to establish a religious state with a fascist king, that is what they got away from.

With a padded ‘Extreme Court’ anything can happen and probably not for the good of the country.
