I have a device that mounts underneath a cabinet. It is “v” shaped, to accommodate different size jars; and small metal teeth to grip the lid. You put the jar in the “v”, then twist the jar. A handy device.
I just finished adding all the ingredients to a wonderfully aromatic marinara with onions, finely chopped carrots and celery (Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it) mushrooms and about ½ litre of cheap red wine (I prefer Almadén) Let it simmer for a few (4 – 6) hours and it will be just right for dinner tonight. Meatballs were cooked yesterday and are in the fridge waiting to be pulled out and zapped in the microwave for dinner. (And luncheon for the clowder)
Tap on a metal lid with the butt of a heavy knife hard enough to make a dimple. This will both reduce the internal vacuum slightly and help break loose the screw thread seal.
if you can’t get the lid open with your lid gripper – a tool every kitchen should have – try slipping a butter knife under the lid gently. you’ll know the lid is ready to turn when you hear a tiny whoosh… ☺

I what the side of the lid with a knife until it loosens. My daughter says slap the bottom and the lid will loosen, but it doesn’t do it for me.

Easy, use either a butter knife or flat head screw driver, put under lid and pop the seal. Easy to open.

I use a piece of plastic leftover shelf liner which is made to grip what is on it.
My problem is that my hands are small (I wear children’s gloves) so I cannot always get my hand around the lid and he has to help me.
