A friend of mine had the Cherokee princes story in her family. Turned out the person was actually half black. They came up with the Cherokee princess story to explain the occasional darker skin in the family, especially in the past. I wonder how many other people with Cherokee princess stories, share the same reality as my friend?
When I read a headline about people opposed to racially based mascot names here in Wisconsin, I figured the article was getting set to point out that our state harbors not only Indian team nicknames but also (based on a listing at MaxPreps, http://tinyurl.com/onc4c9w) such “offensive” labels as Bishops, Fighting Cardinals, and Popes (Catholics); Blackshirts (Italy); Buccaneers and Pirates (Caribbean); Cōōns; Cubans; Dons (Mafia); Elks (service clubs); Fighting Kellys and Irish (Ireland); Flying Dutchmen (Netherlands); Green Mountain Boys (New England, also boys); Highlanders (Scotland); Hurricanes and Thunder (meteorologists); Ledgers (accountants); Norse, Norsemen, Norskies, and Vikings (Scandinavia); Phoenix (Arizona); Rebels (southern USA); Spartans (Greece); Trojans and Fighting Trojans (Turkey); and Wizards (Hogwarts).
People who are determined to feel offended at simply being mentioned should have a field day here in the Badger State.
most “Mexicans” have more than 25% native blood, making them legally native and by rights have more right to be here than and 1% “Indian” princesses of European origin
