I think Heart more effort into her report than father did, since he did virtually nothing.

Hey Heart, your Mom deserves an A for being such a hard working and loving single Mom. Your Dad, on the other hand, deserves an F or an incomplete as he has not been around very much in your life. Anyhow a B- is not such a bad grade and you know that Char put in a lot of hard work to earn her A on her Mom!

In panels 2, 3 and 4, Heart looks so much luke her dad! Honestly these kinds of assignments are cruel for kids with tricky home situations. The assignment should be about the job of an adult in your life. And then kids without stable situations can interview someone at the school instead of a parent.

A ‘B-’ grade for writing about a ‘D+’ father. Why a ‘D+’ and not an ‘F’? Well, he doesn’t hit her or anything.

She figured since her father wasn’t interested, it got as much respect as it deserved.

I’d rather see her father as something less than a washout. That seems cliche and a little lazy.

A look at a parent who actually wants to get it right, but struggles has a lot more potential storywise and in terms of potential messages/points to be made.

The challenge of being a parent from the outside looking in. Balancing being present/available and creating a loving relationship with your child while managing the ongoing co-parenting relationship with an ex that you may or may not have a good relationship with. The stumbling blocks you may unintentionally put in your own way.

It doesn’t require being intrusive on the main day to day strip. But it can add much more color when it is brought on stage.

Just a much more fertile field than the thoughtless non-parent trope.
