Something similar happened to me in a small, North Carolina town in the heart of tobacco-growing country, back in the 90s. I was asked if I wanted the smoking or non-smoking section. I said non-smoking, so they led me all the way through the restaurant to a tiny, undecorated room way in the back.

Looks good to me. Then again, I don’t smoke, nor do I want to be bothered by the nasty smell when I eat.

I remember when I was a kid the ‘non-smoking’ section was a small area at the back ,usually with a view of the kitchen, then as time s changed the smoking section became the small section and now it’s goen entirely. YAY

Way past time for busybodies to stop harassing those who choose to continue smoking. It’s their personal business and nobody elses!

When I smoked cigarettes, you could smoke on a plane, and a theater I went to in New Jersey had a smoking section.

‘Course, that was to see “Star Wars” for the second time after it’s release…

Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a pool. It just doesn’t work. I am glad my state no longer allows any smoking in restaurants. Now if they could just get the staff to stop smoking right outside the front door, it would be nicer yet.

I don’t think they’ve gone far enough: smoke rises. They need a heavy vac and vent system. They also need to tell them to not be ash-holes and to keep their butts to themselves.

Alternately, the smoking section can have a nice view of the cemetery.

I worked at Megacorp for decades. When I started in the early 80s, smoking was allowed in all office areas and most other places except clean rooms and such. We were in a bullpen, so you could have someone smoking at the desk behind you. Over time it went to designated smoking rooms, smoking outside, to finally no smoking on company property at all.

If you can’t go without a cigarette for an hour while you eat dinner, you have much more serious problems than where you get stuck sitting.

I was stationed at the Pentagon in the mid to late 80’s and they went smoke free while I was there. My good fortune is that I don’t have an addictive personality and was able to stop cold turkey. One day we could smoke at our desks and most anywhere in the building and the next day it was outside only for smokers.

And by that time I was smoking a pipe and you just can’t easily take a 10 minute smoke break with a pipe… it just doesn’t work that well, so I stopped smoking. Still have a small bag of left over pipe tobacco tucked away in the humidor I was using back then (and still have). I do occasionally wonder just how well that stuff would be as a smoke after all this time… but just not enough to light up 8^)

Many started smoking to be part of the crowd. Then the crowd died off.

Both my parents smoked unfiltered Camel cigarettes. My mom died age 49 from non-smoking related cancer. My dad, at some point, stopped smoking cigarettes but continued smoking pipes and cigars. When he died at 88, he was cancer free. So just because a person smokes does not mean that person will die of smoking-related disease.

This one seems oddly out of time. I can’t remember the last time I went to a restaurant that had a smoking section. I know some bars and casinos still allow smoking but not in restaurants.
