The Serbians, Bosnians, Hertzigovinans, and others wanted freedom to have their own little countries rather than being part of the Hapsburgs little empire. That war saw the end of 4 empires and the start of the dissolution of two more. And it was far reaching. At the Versailles Peace Conference at the end of the war the Big Four, mostly Wilson, were all about making little countries for just about every ethnic group they could. Except those people who wanted to be free from the Big Four. Of note, a student living in Paris, from what in the future would be called Vietnam asked Wilson to help him get freedom from the French. Wilson basically told him that freedom was for white people and he should go away. Later the student went to the USSR for help after they had settled their civil war. He got it. The student was later known as Ho Chi Minh.
One of my favorite topics to cover when I taught. The assassination certainly was the catalyst, but it really was in none participants’ interests to actually go to war. That still boggles my mind. It was a culmination of a whole series of events/trends (that in retrospect look “obvious” as to where it was heading) and a bell weather for most of the issues of the 20th C. (and many of this century). Just the mapmaking by the participants at Versailles…
