What irritate me are constructions such as “police say that Mr. X is the alleged kidnapper” rather than “the police allege that Mr. X is the kidnapper”.
Actually, the police will probably add to the confusion by saying something like “we’re charging him with being the alleged kidnapper”, but they really ought to phrase it differently.
