Oldlegodad, I fear you’re not paying attention in class. Control over the Chechen republic is in the hands of Chechens, headed by the esteemed Ramzan Kadyrov, who certainly has no need to learn anything from Russians about killing opponents….
There always are. My students are always shocked when I tell them that half the reason for the war of 1812 was a land grab towards Canada.
When Spain was in control of Mexico they allowed and occasionally encouraged Americans to settle in Texas. By the time of the Mexican Revoloution Americans were the majority in many parts of Texas. The settlers were originally in favor of being part of Mexico. A decent explanation of events would take too long for a mostly off topic post.
Like it or not, between the Soviet exit from Afghanistan and the American invasion of Iraq, Chechnya was THE place to go for Islamic jihadists to learn their trade.
No, that does not excuse the Russians’ behavior in Chechnya…..any more than it does their actions in Afghanistan.

The Russians are good folks. They won’t let Chechnya go any more than we would let the Dakota’s go back to the Native Americans.

The history of Mexico’s loss of Texas is more complicated than Americans beating up on poor Mexico. Mexico has quite a bit of blame on their side.
