Singapore is technically a democracy in that they have free and open elections. The caveat is they don’t have free speech and outright ban criticizing the government. It’s kind of hard to run against the ruling party when you’re not allowed to publicly criticize them.
A friend from Hong Kong, whose family is there, says so far the family is more upset by the demonstrations disrupting things than the granted, Chinese “abuse of the election system”, it’s a mixed bag indeed. China needs Hong Kong, and needs it stable, so it’s going to get interesting?
