I’ve only read on the outskirts of the Assange leaks, no deep delve into them. But it seems that he published things that the government would rather not have had publicized, things that it shouldn’t have been doing and/or that put the US in a bad light. Isn’t that what the press is supposed to do? If the government is doing what it shouldn’t I’d really rather know. One of the political cartoons I saw had the Afghan leader saying that the leaks didn’t tell him anything he didn’t already know. It was the American people who didn’t know before and now do. Or at least could if they wanted to.Maybe this is part of what Jefferson meant by the Tree of Liberty being refreshed by the blood of patriots (metaphorically in this instance), although I suspect that he didn’t mean for that blood to be shed by the patriot’s own side. And there’s the detail that Assange is Australian by birth, of course.
