^ The above statement is true but so what? Is it lamenting loss of influence? It is, of course, quite serious. China asks far fewer questions whilst buying up Africa’s resources than the Western nations who last had their fingers in Africa’s pie, and cares far less about African health & welfare than their own countrymen (if that were possible). There have been some laudable projects (eg. new agricultural techniques) but mostly it is a wholesale rip-off. The Western nations are a little peeved but…Africa isn’t anyone’s playground to exploit to one’s heart’s content. But that is what everyone sees it as, isn’t it?

Oldlegodad, I never cease to be amazed at the breadth of your historical knowledge ! I’ve always believed that the IOC decision to award the 1936 Olympic Summer Games to Berlin was made on 26 April 1931, i e, nearly two years before Hitler came to power in Germany. I hadn’t been aware that Herr Hitler had lobbied before the IOC for Berlin, but bow to your superior insight into wie es eigentlich gewesen ist….
