Riperton was a true Chicago original. She sung in a girl group (the Gems) and solo as ‘Angela Davis’(!). Then, when Chess records Marshall Chess wanted to put together a ‘progressive soul’ group, ‘ROTARY CONNECTION’ incorporating jazz, rock, and funk, Minnie did vocals, often giving people the impression there was a synthesizer on some tracks, but it was her eight octave range that they were hearing. After RC broke up, Minnie went solo on a record produced by fellow RC member Charles Stepney, entitled ‘Come To My Garden’. The album didn’t chart well, but Stevie Wonder heard it .. and he told Minnie that he’d worn out three LP’s listening to it! It was after this that Wonder penned ‘Lovin’ You’ for her. Look up ‘I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun’ for a rarely heard gem, and ‘Les Fleurs’.
