“National Health Care” in various forms has proven far more most effective than our “free market” system, and ours is vastly more expensive. Big pharma has gotten the exact opposite of “common sense” with regard to Medicare drug provisions, thank you Congress that feels those same “subsidized” profits shouldn’t be taxed. (BTW not going to google for the link, but several months ago saw that one of the west African nations was getting 43% income tax from the oil companies, and they made no fuss about paying. The 35% POTENTIAL MAXIMUM tax rate in the U.S. is NOT the highest, simply because it’s very, very, rarely paid at that rate, thanks again to Congress- and that is BOTH parties!)
Regulating a sounder payment system in the U.S. for health care IS viable, and possible, and would do away with that strawman argument about ER care for a runny nose because the client has no insurance of any kind.
Our current health care system stil depends on DOPE (Double Our Profits Everyday!). Rational profits are fine, and yes, very “Capitalist”, but exhorbitant profits, while paying lower salaries, or exporting production, and having the poor pay all the taxes isn’t “Capitalism”, it’s a Feudal system, and corporations ARE the lords and lawgivers.
It would be really nice if the Democrats and the Republicans could get together and come up with a health insurance system that would work reasonably well. Then instead of watching each side blame the other, we could watch them congratulate each other for working in the best interests of the American people.
Sorry, they didn’t have complete control of congress any more than the Republicans have it now. The filibuster is not dead yet. And remember, many of the particulars in the ACA were put there in order to woo Republican votes (as it was modeled on a Republican program conceived in the Heritage Foundation). The fact that the GOP would not even support their own ideas was the real problem. And in case you hadn’t noticed, the ACA has been a success. Millions are covered that weren’t, and million who would have lost their coverage without it have not. Premiums have gone up, on average, less than usual; and were it not for GOP obstruction in the creation of state marketplaces, the story would be a LOT better. My premiums next year will be 1.9% higher than this year, the smallest increase I have seen in at least 15 years. In many places premiums will be lower next year than last. Is it perfect? Hell no. Not even close. Is anyone worse off than without it? Certainly. But on the whole, is it better than what preceded it? Judged on the “greatest good to the great number” standard? Yes, without any doubt at all.
