Sometimes the worst thing that can happen is for you to win so much in elections. Now that Republicans are in control of nothing, they can sit there, do nothing and say “I told you so”.
We have a political party like that in Canada, they’re called the NDP. Bunch of know-nothing loudmouths who’ve made a career of losing elections, pretending to cry about how they would have done a much better job.
Expect nothing but that for the next 4 years from Republicans.

Toles (and the Democrats) has come late to the party. It was obvious months ago that the only thing the Republicans had to offer the American political system was destructive obstructionism. Considering how many serious problems the US faces, that’s a sad comment.
What I find interesting is that the Dem’s who blame the Republicans are actually covering for their own party members who will not tow their party’s line. I mean, what’s worse: to simply say no, or to say no to your own party? Generally it’s the latter, but not this time - the lib Dem’s won’t dare bad-mouth the centrists of their own party, WHO ARE THE ONES THAT MAY STOP THIS LEGISLATION. Why not? Why complain about the Repub’s if you shouldn’t even need them?
This is how desperate the left is when they fight a battle. It’s all politcal - even when the problem is their own party, they blame Republicans, and the fools in the lib media (like Toles here) buy into it, apparently without checking facts.
They’re just extensions of the Democratic party, giving the unsuspecting a distorted picture. Pathetic.

Some Republicans have long offered a solution to the Health Care Issue with protected individual health savings accounts in lieu of paying money to the HMO’s. It’s never gotten traction, and you can thank plenty of Reps and Dems for that.
Similar to the actually progressive Republican take on education reform involving vouchers and school competition, which will always be opposed by the NEA. There are thousands of innovative ideas in the Republican party, but they rarely develop a head of steam.
What do you want a person of conscious to do when he deeply sincerely philosophically opposes a proposed major policy shift. Compromise your ideals? Should the liberals have said to Bush, we don’t agree with you in Iraq but only send in half the number of troops you have asked for.
As said above the Republicans have offered many alternatives. The Democrats just say no. Health Savings accounts, large deductible policies, tort reform etc. But the Dems walk around with a big NO button.

and GNW all the things you mentioned do nothing to reform the well-documented abuses of the health insurance industry and would in fact ensure that people will pay more for less ad infinitum

Without reform of the insurance industry’s abusive practices, we’re forcing people to pay more and more for less and less. And we’re forcing more people ONTO medicaid when medical costs drive people into bankruptcy.

On another site 2 weeks ago I posted a list of all the state mandated extra services that insurance companies must pay for. Adds hundreds of dollars to premiums. that answers your question.

Republicans did indeed pass HSA, that is why they are available today.
