I have an IP phone for work in my study, on which I receive after-hour voicemails which page my iPhone. Rather than get up to check it, I’ll use the iPhone to dial in remotely. It doesn’t cost me anything, but I still feel a bit guilty.

Not realistic. A real American family would have shot the phone as soon as they realized something unfamiliar was happening.
