This is a serious problem for multiple reasons (listen up, @MontanaBill: none of this is new, but clearly you have not paid attention)—
1. If we fail to reach herd immunity, which is looking increasingly likely, that means the virus will stay in circulation AND DEVELOP VARIANTS. The variants we have seen thus far have been more infectious, some more deadly, and it is likely that some will be able to beat the vaccines we have given enough opportunity.
2. Herd immunity has only been achieved in modern times by getting 75%-85% of the population vaccinated. Right now, we are nowhere near that, and with a “40% vaccine hesitant” rate, we never will.
3. Even the best vaccines are 94% effective, not 100%. While they will prevent death or serious hospitalization, one can still get ill from COVID-19, and SPREAD IT TO OTHER PEOPLE, as well as enabling variants to develop, as in #1.
4. Many people are not capable of getting vaccinated right now: children, infants, people with compromised immune systems. If you care for anyone who isn’t you, you should get vaccinated to protect THEM.
5. The Economist did a comprehensive analysis of the data, which concluded not only that deaths are two to four times higher than official reports, but that we are NOT in the second wave, but still in the first, which is still climbing. One comment from their expert: “Expect it to be more India.” https://www.economist.com/briefing/2021/05/15/there-have-been-7m-13m-excess-deaths-worldwide-during-the-pandemic
And isn’t it funny that the same people who think no one should EVER vote without special ID are willing to lie about a life-saving vaccination for no real reason? Tell you what: let’s only let the vaccinated vote. They have proved they are willing to serve their country.
