The right thing to do with it, but it seemed more like a Stephen Miller (Goebbels Jr.) thing.

“Give me your lazy, your rich, your pale skinned masses yearning to feel superior,

the wealthy refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the clueless,

white bread to me: I lift my lamp beside the golf club door.”

The Ministry of Truth is alive and well as the poem shows. The Ministry of Love has been doing a fine job with the border detention camps and incarceration of children. The Ministry of Plenty is fighting a losing tariff war with Eastasia (although this will be re-written before the elections by MiniTrue so it seems the Tangerine Palpatine is winning.

“What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?…I can’t say that I was not a part of a product of that.”— Rep. Steve King

I don’t think the USA has ever lived up to the full import of the phrase from the poem, “your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” We have at time turned away at the docks those that were sick or undesirable at that time in our history. The poem exudes an ideal that we are still wrestling with even as our form of democracy strains against the powers of fascism, monarchy, and other forms of totalitarianism. But, we press on to our higher calling and risk losing it all because that is the nature of democracy. Though far less than ideal, we nevertheless strive on.

The republicans want to rewrite the poem on the Statue of Liberty and the Constitution.

    Did you know:

In 1903 (the year the poem was mounted to the base of the statue) the US denied entry to 5812 hopeful immigrants because….

    wait for it….

They were at risk for “becoming a public charge”.

So much for the poor, the homeless and the wretched refuse. The US has been turning away people who cannot self support for well over 130 years. Beginning in 1882 the US barred entry to “idiots, lunatics, convicts, and persons likely to become a public charge.”
