I was a little kid when we first heard of atomic power and my teacher told is the atomic bomb was made by splitting an atom. After that I was afraid to slice an apple because I thought I might split an atom and the apple would explode.

Does split mean head to toe, or horizontally through the middle? I think split infers mirror image of both parts, so I guess it means head toe, but I’d like to hear other opinions on such a serious question that all inquisitive minds want the answer to.
