    Long ago when I was a kid, you could actually buy an ant farm through mail order out of a catalog. It came with real ants. As I recall, it was not very successful, they did not last long. Today, this kind of animal abuse would never be allowed…. but of course one could make your own farm and put local ants to work – good science fair project for kids?

    The lifespan of ants depends on the caste. Males live for only a few weeks and die after mating. Workers usually live for several months. Queens can live for decades under the right conditions.
