I’m glad they don’t do salt here in the northwest. Now, if they would just discover the snowplow.A friend from the Chicago area noted that Bend, Oregon was the worst place for public maintenance of roads he’d ever seen and I have to agree. A foot of snow? Eh, just wait for it to melt off. Oh, it’s packed into ice in 3 days? Well, we won’t do anything except try to get studded tires banned…

When I worked for a time in extreme northern california, they had more snowplows in Siskyou county than they have in Deschutes county, despite 1. the drastically lesser number of roads to plow, 2. much fewer snowy roads, 3. a population base less than 1/8th. During the warm months, one saw the snow plows moving rocks off the roads.

No such luck here. When I was a kid, I can remember weeks going by without snow removal. And last year, I can remember weeks going by without snow removal. This year has been mostly rain, thankfully.

Sounds like were I use to live years back. They kept right on top of the roads, but for days after bad weather there would be a pile of salt running down the middle of the road.

Salt can be harmful to plants, animals, and property, so that’s why Colorado has been using snow-melting chemicals which are a little more eco-friendly.
