I can’t forgive “the system” for publishing Beetle Bailey though the whole Vietnam War era, in which tens of thousands of American soldiers died, and allowing Mr. Walker to mention the war only once in his strip. Cartoonists don’t get paid much and they are slaves to the whim of ignorant editors and greedy publishers. I also know that the Stars and Stripes (newspaper) refused to publish the one Beetle Bailey strip that simultaneously mentioned the war and the Army’s race issues. That’s when I stopped reading Beetle Bailey, which I had done since I was an army brat in the 1950s. That was around 1968, when I was in the Army and between my two tours in Vietnam. At the time I blamed Mr. Walker, but now I know more about hard the lives of cartoonists are. Bah.
