I’ll agree with the it-looks-cool explanation for Supes.

Batman, on the other hand, wears a cape with weights sewn in the edges, as a weapon, I believe. I also think it has a limited amount of bullet-proofness.

And, yes, it looks cool.

Haven’t you heard? Capes are out; dusters are in!Nick Fury, Starlord, Blade, Pariah, Gambit, Constantine, even Ol’ man Logan. It’s all about the coat.

According to the first (or maybe second?) episode of Supergirl, the cape helps with aerodynamics.

In the real world, the answer is that Superman dresses like a trapeze artist entering the ring. (The cape would come off before the performance.) Supergirl, on the other hand, is dressed as an ice skater, but with the cape because it’s part of the Super—— look. (Even Krypto the Superdog has a cape.)
