I normally read these comics in order from least progressive to most progressive. I’m seriously thinking about changing it from most annoying to least, and putting Rall in first place.
Sounds like a cry baby not getting his way. This is nature’s way of telling you that you need to move to the center. Life is like a bell curve. Those on the far ends get rung repeatedly.
When you think about it, it’s remarkable how so many people in the US and abroad including myself saw in Obama what they wanted to see, a progressive who was going to bring substantive leftward reform to Washington and the country and to foreign relations, to the extent that he got the Nobel Peace Prize on spec. I remember the editor emeritus for Canada’s national newspaper saying Obama was going to be the most liberal president ever. It took a few years for the illusion to be dispelled for many, longer than that for others, and there are some who have never let go of it, blaming his failings on those vicious Republicans. He finally gave the game away when he said that he was in effect an early ‘80s moderate Republican. As Mark Twain said, it’s easier to fool people than to convince them they’ve been fooled.
Wait, I thought Obama wasn’t running this year. Or Hilary.
What do Obama’s failures have to do with a choice between Trump and Biden? I mean, yes, I understand what you’re trying to say, Ted. But 2020 is not 2008 or 2012.
All you have to know is 4 more years of trump=4 more years of AG Barr and four more years of a President who takes advice from Fox+Friends, Alex Jones and Quanon.
Forgot to add four more years of trump=30 years of Justices Cruz and Barrett. At least Obama appointed two progressives to the Court, I doubt McCain would have.
Oh, an Obama comic just to remind us of days gone past. I wonder how it is all going to work out for Rall. He seems to be trapped in a philosophical adolescence, made worse by a lack of self honesty. The simple truth is that nothing has ever been good enough for him and he opposes our system of government in general. It is highly probably that Rall would lose all favor for Sanders if he became President.
Rall may well be the only independent thinker in all the land. Today he’s right wing nutcase, but before he was a dead on leftie. We just have to be prepared for his flipping and flopping from side to side as he supports his ideas only.
Obama was a great President because he did not move to the left. In Rall’s world; everyone will live in deprivation and under mind control, viva la revolucion !
I have read some fairly compelling information that a lot of the social media stuff attacking Biden on “behalf” of Bernie Sanders and encouraging not voting in protest is actually being done by conservatives. I guess I can’t blame them for taking advantage of dogmatic easily-manipulated people.
Obama was left of center, and as any REAL Liberal knows extreme left or right givers us poor government.
TARP was Bush2’s money give-a-way plan. Obama made all that tax payer money to Wall Street and the auto makers into loans and charged them all 8% interest which Obama then put in the Treasury. Obama made money for tax payers reducing our National Debt, but some people never mention that.
Obama was blocked by McConnell and Republican/conservatives at every turn, including closing GITMO. Yet, Obama brought us out of the worst crash since 1929, and into a recovery that had record setting growth all the way until tRump’s failure to lead crashed the economy.
Rall writes and draws cartoons for Sputnik International, a news website platform established by the Russian government-owned news agency Rossiya Segodnya. I expect him to be left of most of America.
Largely on target. Obama did this to himself and created the legacy he wanted. Obama could have done so much better and failed. He disappointed many. But despite his many flaws, taking the job between Bush and Trump makes him look a lot better than he was, just by comparison with the before and after.
The interesting thing is that so many immoderate moderates follow Rall and take the trouble to shower him with execration. They’re like gerbils hypnotized by a snake. I take it as an encouraging sign: in their hearts, they know they’re wrong, which is a step on the road to being right.
From Danielle Pletka, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute:
“The corrosive left-wing extremism of 2020 would be ascendant, while a smiling President Biden assures the country that everything is fine. Trump, for all his flaws, could be all that stands between our imperfect democracy and the tyranny of the woke left.”
From Alexandra Petri: “Believe me when I tell you that the LAST THING I could POSSIBLY want would be to vote for Donald Trump. That’s why I am so stunned that you have taken it upon yourself to go to such lengths to FORCE me to vote for him! You sick, sick monster! I don’t even like him, not even one little bit. So I hope you’re happy with what YOU are making me do, which comes to me as a total surprise and is definitely not a foregone conclusion in any way.”
Obama stopped torture programs. Although he also prevented Bush from being prosecuted by international courts, if I remember correctly. I don’t know why there wasn’t a public option; after all, they did ram the whole thing through Congress, ignoring Republicans, which was the right thing to do. As for the trillions of dollars for bankers (probably not actually trillions of dollars), those were LOANS that the banks paid back with interest. But they should have extended those loans to smaller businesses, for sure.
Obama actively drew down our involvement in the Middle East. Troop levels were drastically reduced, replaced by the Iraqi and Afghani soldiers that we armed and trained. After the initial defeats at Mosul, and the backing of the US, the Iraqi army has taken all of its land back, and proven itself to be an effective fighting force. The wars were not “biggified”. The Libyan Civil War was started, so you SHOULD criticize Obama for that.
As for the Occupy Wall Street protesters, they were cleared out because of sanitary hazard. We Lefties really have to learn how to be less obnoxious and more likable to the people we’re demanding change from. And the crackdown did not involve Obama at all, it involved the City of New York.
Also, I would just like to remind you that even Obama wasn’t elected with a “mandate from the people”. 53-46 means that 46% of people would rather have McCain than Obama. You shouldn’t move too far to the left when so many people don’t want it. Of course, one should enact leftist policies, but keep in mind always what the opposition says. So Obama was almost as far left as anyone should expect him to be.
Ted Rall has the same problem that the more extreme right wing cartoonist have. He thinks that Presidents can do anything by themselves. Yes, Trump is running the country like a drunken frat boy on spring break, but he can’t do that without the consent and assistance of Sen. McConnell and his crew.
I doubt that Sen Sanders could have done any different than Obama did.
Again, you’re not attacking the true obstacles to your ‘leftist agenda.’ That’s the number of GOP seats in Congress. Bernie wouldn’t have gotten a judge past McConnell either.
And a reminder that it was all those (cough, cough) "progressives’ in FL who wouldn’t vote for Gore in 2000 who got us where we are today. Imagine if we had a President who believed climate change was real and did something about it. Maybe the west wouldn’t be in flames.
So unless you are willing to move forward, even if it’s not at the pace you prefer, stop calling yourself progressive.
During the 2008 campaign Obama said he’d bring all the boys home. The minute he stepped into the oval office he had to send 30,000 troops to Afghanistan. Made him look like a liar and pissed off his wife. Notice how much he aged. The money is good and the perks are fabulous but he had to do exactly as he was told.
I know, let’s appoint Ted Rall president and see how far to the left he can move — in terms of real actions instead of hyperbole!
Ted still dreams that things will get so bad that there will be a revolution that will install “real” leftists. Never mind the cost to the people! Ted is a true believer! Nothing except a far left government will do for him! The public be damned for not agreeing with him!
He’s as much a child as Trump. Fortunately, much less dangerous.
Jesus, Rall, yes, Obama wasted his first two years trying to appease Republicans and get them to work with Democrats for the good of the country, but after that, Republicans had control of Congress and #MoscowMitch made sure that nothing he wanted got through. And now, electing Biden is the only chance we have of stopping this country’s avalanching slide into fascism. You might want to support that instead of constantly bemoaning the utopia we can never have.
Sorry dude, still not buying it. Voting for Biden come November. The guy’s far from perfect, but there’s such a thing as the vastly lesser of two evils.
As a Canadian, I don’t have a vote in the US. On the other hand, I’ve spent a lot of time going to school in the US, and I do have lots of opinions.
I generally believe that Obama and Biden are and were good guys; they certainly didn’t do or not do things that I would have had them do or not do, some of which was to be sure the fault of Moscow Mitch or others. I like Bernie much more. Had I a vote in the US, it would certainly go to Biden, as the best choice to un-do the terrible awful things that Trump is doing.
But I cannot deny the truth of this cartoon. One of the problems of reality is that admiration for some people should not blind us to their faults.
