Very easily, apparently!

So anyone who disagrees with you is a Nazi National Socialist German Workers’ Party?

Over the top…maybe. But with a large nugget of truth.

As in all these types of debates the first person that makes a Nazi comparison, loses.

jrmermHitting too close to home? KKK = SA, genocidal police = state police apparatus, Jim Crow = Nürmburg Edicts, Pelican Island/Angola/etc. = Dachau/etc., supporting media = supporting media.

I think Mr. Rall’s point is not that the situation in the US is equal to the Third Reich, but that you can easily put the arguments of racists into a Nazi context without alteration, for example, ‘What about Jew on Jew violence?’ For racists, this means their arguments are no longer entertaining, and they should come up with some new ones. Too limited mentally? Work harder, guys!

This is not only tone deaf, it is historically ignorant. Aside from surface similarities the only point of comparison is that hate is hate, and hate does not reason.

This is distasteful and offensive.

Brilliant, Mr. Rall. Humble thanks

If you don’t like the Hitler comparisons, maybe you should stop acting like Nazis. There is a systemic issue when going outside with the wrong skin color is a death sentence.

Perhaps another point that Mr Rall is trying to make is that state supported hate is the most insidious kind.

Absolutely despicable. To draw a moral equivalence between US cops and Nazis is depraved and disgusting.

A lot of commenters don’t seem to have clear grasp of what a satirical cartoonist does and what may be in the cartoonist’s “tool kit.” I believe hyperbole is a standard tool. He’s a cartoonist, not a historian. He is under no obligation to adhere to a version of the truth that satisfies everyone. In Nazi Germany one group was elevated at the expense of all others and some of the marginalized groups were viciously persecuted. How is that not analogous to how some white males in this country view and treat the group(s) they fear and despise?

sueamarlucanAnd you know less about me. I have known those with fading numbers the length of their forearm because screaming, writhing children couldn’t be held down tightly enough for neat tattoos on the wrist. I learned to count in German the same time I did in English because of barely escaped in time neighbors whose kids outnumbered the rest of the kids in the neighborhood and so thought it logical that we should learn the majority language. (Then we moved away, as Methodist preachers tend to do, at three and I lost my chance to become bilingual painlessly.) I had a professor in seminary who was an authority on the anti-Nazi underground during the war, and studied Bonhoffer under him.

My problem with the first panel is that Hitler NEVER would have said that sort of thing. He never pretended to have any sympathy for the Jews.
You can make comparisons with the rise of a charismatic charlatan to the rise of Hitler. But I’m afraid the first panel just does not work.
