The Law of conservation of Democracy. Some wags say it's weird for us to build democracy overseas as we dismantle it here. (Man 1: No, no, no! Whoever counts the ballots must be fair and impartial! ) (Man 2: But I'm the president's brother!) Cynics call it hypocrisy, but there's only so much democracy to go around. (George Bush: If we tolerate dissent here at home, we'll lose the political will to liberate dissidents abroad!) Even though Democracy is a limited commodity, we selfless Americans don't want to hog it- we're spreading it around! (Woman: If tapping my phone frees oppressed victims of a police state, it's fine with me!) (Man 3: Let's give the 4th Amendment to Burma- they need it more than we do!) Coming Soon: A 24-hour world democracy exchange! (Man 4: Former U.S. due process rights here- who wants 'em?) (Man 5: Dump free speech!)
