I keep asking people who say that to name something that is NOT what it is. So far, no answers.
I would argue that “Where’s the value added?”, while a cliche, is still a meaningful question. “You want to change the product; does your change make it BETTER, or does it merely make it DIFFERENT?”
“It is what it is” is not just a cliche but a tautology and therefore meaningless…EXCEPT as a response to the construction “Yes, it’s a crime, but it’s not REALLY a crime” (or something similar).
