It’s too easy to feel a sense of fatalistic exasperation about the sheer senseless of the violence as well as the political reality in which the Republican Party will stop at nothing to make sure _no) gun restrictions are ever enacted. and a Democratic Party which has proven to be unable, because of the filibuster in the Senate, to enact even the tiniest of meaningful gun reform. This happens again and again, even in the face of unending and gruesome violence.

But we need to keep trying, even if the SCOTUS shoots down most attempts. At least in states not run by Republicans, some actions are taking place. The California Senate, for example, advanced gun control bills, including one sponsored by Governor Newsom that, like the Texas abortion law, deputizes private citizens to enforce it:

The bill allows private citizens to sue anyone who manufactures, distributes or sells so-called “assault weapons” or ghost guns or parts in the state. And, just as importantly, it would provide incentive to do so, with an end goal of removing such weapons from circulation.

After SCOTUS let stand the TX law, Newsom said, “If states can now shield their laws from review by the federal courts, then California will use that authority to protect people’s lives, where Texas used it to put women in harm’s way.”

Interesting cartoon. But, it is far from accurate. The GQP control the filibuster that is blocking the Dems from doing anything. Our two party system was designed to support the rural communities. Even in the worst of times our Founding Fathers believed that honorable men (yes, men) with different views could come to agreement on what was best for America.

They feared a demagogue and uneducated legislators, basically the GQP and Burning Dumpster Butt Head.

Schumer, 2019: If we win the Senate, we’ll keep the filibuster

Leftists: Chuck Schumer is stupid, keeping the filibuster will be disastrous because nothing will get passed.

Centrists: This is eleventy-dimensional chess he’s playing, keeping the filibuster is super smart
