Siren 1: We weren't wrong... we weren't wrong...
Siren 2: Jump in, the quagmire's fine,
Siren 3: You'll be greeted as liberators!
And let us not forget that George H. W. Bush was proffered the SAME plan by the SAME people – and HE was smart enough to turn it down. Because THAT Bush actually spent some time out in the world and knew the neocon fantasy was just that.Sadly, he was right, and his son didn’t get it.
“Why does the US let the Saudis call the shots?”-Because the Bushes and the Saudis are close business partners.
Didn’t this latest mess come out Syria?
And I should have added that GHWB disagreed with the Iraq invasion in 2003, as well.Unlike his son, George HW Bush built a strong international alliance — a real alliance, where in fact we not only spent no money, we arguably made a profit (cf. a friend of mine who was minor staff in the Bush White House) — to do a specific task, which was done quickly and efficiently. He resisted nation-building, and he was right to do so. He could have gone further had he wanted to. He was FAR more wise in international affairs than his son.
