Ahab, Don’t recall Orin getting that nutty, but Palin, Beck LImbaugh, Coulter, Boehner and many in the “Tea Party” have by implication, if not directly, called for attacking, physically, any who oppose them- staying just shy, barely, of the incitement to riot language in the law.
Might I note that Carlson did not make this party-specific? (Though it hasn’t been the left-wingers bringing guns to presidential speeches.)
Orrin Hatch, while he gets over-the-top on occasion, was able to collaborate with Kennedy when they had points in common – the most liberal and most conservative senators were able to find common ground. Something to remember.
With all of our problems, can’t we have discussions, instead of what is going on now, when any action or comment by Obama or the DEMS is attacked as a great evil that will destroy America.
People are throwing bricks, shouting down speakers at public meetings, carrying guns because they think the Socalist Government is comming after them, all because we have reached the point where they think that the Liberials and Dems aren’t just wrong, but they have come to believe they are evil, and evil must be fought at all times.
It is time for Republicans and the GOP to step up and stop using fear as a recruiting method, and call out the Tea Baggers, Birthers, and gun nuts for the people they are instead of encourageing them.
just like the dems who threw bricks at their own headquarters in denver around election time. only problem is republicans were blamed, but the dems got caught doing it. all is not what it seems.
I don’t often agree with Church, but I think he’s right this time. I would say that fringe elements and extremists on both sides have engaged in unacceptable behavior over the years. I condemn such actions on the left, and I have always done what I could within the left organizations I’ve worked with to make sure that they don’t happen. No organization I’ve worked with has ever been charged with this kind of behavior.
On the other hand, I do not condemn non-violent civil disobedience, which I think has a role in popular protest.
Thanks Church, but you could have convinced me with about 1/10th the quotes. Back in the day, John Stuart Mill was one of my favourite reads. Now I’ll have to find a copy and re-read. But, correct me if I’m wrong, and I’m sure you will, I did not see in there that a constant barrage of blatant lies intended to deceive and manipulate thought for self interests or hatred strengthens a democracy.
I can agree in principle, although agreement comes with difficulty after listening to only a small amount of Limbaugh, Hannety, Beck, Levin, etc. and seeing some of the reaction post signing of Health Care Bill. Can’t help but wonder if the founding fathers envisaged a little more truth, tolerance, and civility.
Perhaps each of us can encourage civility by maintaining a certain civility in our posts here. Sharp argumentation is one thing, but name-calling is another.
Churchill CLEARLY missed the point of the cartoon. Of course there will be members of EVERY group that will embarrass and misrepresent the ideals of the group. The point is for all sides to recognize (or hopefully realize) that the wingnuts don’t represent me, my perspective, nor the perspective that I challenge or argue against…unless..of course..you are an extremist wingnut yourself
“Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them. There is almost no kind of outrage - torture, imprisonment without trial, assassination, the bombing of civilians - which does not change its moral color when it is committed by ‘our’ side…The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them” -George Orwell
That is what I took from this cartoon, not encouragement to scream about the “other” side’s atrocities which there always will be

You guys have something like 11 000 gun-related homicides per year, any nut can find a few politically motivated in there!
Man, you guys have short fuses.

Perhaps the First Amendment could be tweaked - add something about fair, accurate, balanced, reasonable, tolerant, peaceful. Just a suggestion.

Michele Malkin saying the Virginia Tech shooting victims deserved to be shot because they weren’t armed is opinion (though vile)
Some reporter at the Toronto Star saying Michele Malkin deserves to be shot is another vile opinion.
Obama’s Death Panels are going to euthanize your granny is just an out-right lie.

And to add my own single quote…
