My mother was a big fan of summer school. I learned enough about tennis to realize that I was a lost cause but could pass the written test on it in college. After breaking my arm, I switched to speed reading which has been a big help in life. I’m not sure the math classes did a thing for me but my oldest son suddenly understood the entire math concept after just one summer. Now I don’t think the money’s there in the schools for it but you can go out and find STEM courses.
My parents promised that if I got a B or better in typing class, they’d give me a typewriter for graduation… and I really wanted to not turn in hand-written… messy looking… papers in college. But I wasn’t allowed to take typing during the regular school year because guy. (Gals weren’t allowed in shop class, so that’s fair. Not.)
So I signed up for summer school. Big ol’ brick building stayed pretty pleasantly cool, and there I was, a teen-age guy in a room full of teen-age gals, all dressed for summer weather. It was hell I tell yah!
When I was in junior and senior high school anybody could go to summer school. It was a short version of a regular semester. I loved it! Aside from the fact I loved to learn, and still do, it allowed my to take classes I was interested in, but didn’t have time for during the regular school year. It also filled up a part of the summer so I was less likely to get bored. I loved it!
These days, from what I see here, summer school is only for kids who need remedial work. That’s too bad. Maybe that’s why so many types of summer camps have developed.

As to the “what’s done is done”, cramming for the Final only fills the short-term memory so it is best to get the work done before.

Sadly, as I discovered when raising my own kids, the schools in Oregon & California no longer offer summer school.
