Aunt: Look! The house is done! Gini and her family can move in! Gini and Holly: Really?! Gini: Thank you. Holly: We didn't do that much. Gini: But everyone did a little-- which added up to a lot for my family. Aunt: Now what? Shopping? Surfing? Holly: Can we help build another house?
Holly has been reminded that an adult’s unavoidable misfortune can cost a family so much- like happened to her aunt when the idiot ex ran off with their savings, like could have happened to them when their father died. Evie apparently came to help raise the girls,, not because of something like a raided pension fund or a stock market crash wiping out savings, but Joan may or may not have made her business work to where she and Max could be on their own had she not married someone with an income that was at least enough for the mortgage. Or rent, I guess.
