Stone Soup by Jan Eliot Elwin: Look, Alix. It's the "in" crowd. Alix: Elwin? We're only in the fourth grade. Why do we have to worry about being "popular"? Why can't we just be KIDS? Alix: We shouldn't be worried about anything more than playing in the sun, laughing, running...totally CAREFREE. Elwin: There's too much UV exposure to play in the sun for very long. There's a SMOG ALERT today so we're not supposed to run. As for carefree my dad just got downsized. Alix: I'm NINE. My biggest worry should be what size CRAYON SET to buy. Elwin: I asked for a "paint" program, but Mom said I have to get over my carpal tunnel first.
Alix’s words sound more like what an adult should be saying about her life. Kids her age tend to just accept things as they are - they don’t know what “it should be like.” Plus, they’re far too concerned with growing up - they don’t want to be kids.
