Longest walk of my life between my office and the boss’s office the one time I was laid off.

This happened to me at a company I had worked out for just under 30 years. Fortunately, it was the best thing that ever happened!

Past a certain number of employees (I want to say 30 but I could be off) there’s a Federal plant closing law that applies. Upper management didn’t know that and tried to pull a surprise same-day notice and lay-off—till my husband’s boss told them that by that law, they had to give 30 days’ notice. Oops. So they did, but they weren’t happy about it. They were just going to march that entire facility out the door. Afterwards, another oops as they figured out that that was the only part of the company earning money and tried to hire everybody back. Because, y’know, they’d so earned everybody’s loyalty by wanting to shaft them with zero notice at Christmastime. Somehow they got no takers.
