Company bought by a bigger company, boss sends email about a one on one meeting. I started putting my stuff in the car and wiping my computer of anything personal. Sure enough, it was a bye bye meeting. I was laffing during some of it and the HR person kept looking at my boss!! Strangely, I still get my medical premium paid by the company I worked 3 hours for!!
After I had retired, I heard of a massive lay-off at the company for which I had worked. Rumors had been swirling – and denied – for weeks, but it wasn’t until a call came in from the local paper asking how many would be affected by today’s layoff that management finally admitted what was happening.
“We’re going to have to have a meeting about this. Everybody on this list – Jane, Mike, Bev, Ruth . . . go with this supervisor. Now – Beth, Terry, Linda, Cathy . . . you go with that supervisor. Take your purses, because the floor will be empty.”
“Everybody in this room is fired. You can come back tomorrow and collect your personal belongings.” There were guards at the entrances to the office.
I can relate to this. There were all kinds of rumors about our hospital being sold. Management denied this. Guess we picked up the New York Times and read about it. No more denial. Been years ago, but as I remember, no jobs were lost with the possible exception of upper management and I don’t remember if we got a new administrator or not.
Worked for Digital Equipment Corp – sold to Compaq – merged with HP. Same desk – 3 companies. I saw job level reductions (level 27 to 26) which lowered the pay bands so you couldn’t get a pay raise. In bad times, salaries were cut by 10% to prevent layoffs and then restored when stocks improved (only the executives got the backpay to cover the lost salary). Departments merged and or disolved in reorganizations – folks notified of positions going away (look for another position in the company or quit/retire) – you’re on your own… Corporate world is not fun – glad I’m retired…
worked for a telecom company, when rumors started about reorgs/layoffs started we had a “quality” problem with the phone lines in the conference room. of course we had to monitor the lines to isolate the trouble. Management could never figure out how we knew.

He probably had to go to the bathroom. Caffeine is a diuretic.

Not that Dickerson being gone would be a bad thing. It’s possible that the new management would realize he’s a goof off, but probably not this soon.
