I guess locking them in the trunk is out of the question.

I guess that is why you put them in car seats till they are in their 20s.
Mama always said my sister and I were easy on long car trips, we had our noses stuck in books. My brother.. not so much. Turns out he had dyslexia, and got treatment for it
Mom got good at reaching the back seat while driving…
I used to just pull over until the ruckus stopped in the back seat. After a few long-ish waits, they figured out I meant it…….no more silly fighting.
Put Joan in the trunk.
It works especially well in the driveway because that’s the best time to make other plans and they know it.
