That reminds me of the “Red Hat Society” I saw meeting in a restaurant some years ago. Their group was based on the Jenny Joseph poem “Warning,” “When I am old woman I shall wear purple/With a red hat which doesn’t go. And doesn’t suit me….”. The poem expresses a longing to manifest individuality, even to the point of eccentricity. How silly was this clubs’ interpretation: everyone had to conform to that poem, to wear purple with a red hat. So they all wore purple with red hats. I was invited to join, but declined. I just went away thinking about life’s ironies, strange how these ladies never considered what that poem was really about—NOT conformity at all!
