I just want to be a unique individual like everybody else!
Look at the big picture dear
Oh, the ironing of the situation.
All the nonconformists conforming.
“Yes, we are all individuals!”
Should be interesting what teens write about themselves.
“Let’s be independent, together!”
That reminds me of the “Red Hat Society” I saw meeting in a restaurant some years ago. Their group was based on the Jenny Joseph poem “Warning,” “When I am old woman I shall wear purple/With a red hat which doesn’t go. And doesn’t suit me….”. The poem expresses a longing to manifest individuality, even to the point of eccentricity. How silly was this clubs’ interpretation: everyone had to conform to that poem, to wear purple with a red hat. So they all wore purple with red hats. I was invited to join, but declined. I just went away thinking about life’s ironies, strange how these ladies never considered what that poem was really about—NOT conformity at all!
