@MuddyUSA – So how do you propose to keep the folks you describe as “crazies” from getting and using weapons that enable them to kill multiple victims in just a couple of minutes?
Yes, actions by crazy, self-absorbed people can cause 5-10-15-20 deaths in a single day. Yes, we should be aware of such situations and take reasonable steps to prevent those actions.
But never forget that inactions by crazy, self-absorbed people can be devastating as well. Case in point:
2020-01-07 • Presidential Daily Brief: “Analysts concluded [coronavirus] could be a cataclysmic event.” • Trump did nothing.
2020-03-11 • World Health Organization declares a global pandemic.
2020-04-15 • While continuing to lie about the pandemic, Trump suspends US funding for WHO.
2021-04-18 • US coronavirus deaths: 580,838 (66 weeks after PDB; 8801/week; 4% of the world’s population; 26% of its COVID deaths)
For comparison …
1941-12-07 • Pearl Harbor attack: 2,403
2001-09-11 • terrorist attacks: 2,977 (5 weeks after PDB warned Bush about it)
Korean War (33,686) + Vietnam War (58,220) + Afghan War (7,970): 99,876
I don’t know if the NRA has its logo on a flag or not, but I think that the point of this cartoon would be sharpened significantly if Benson had used an NRA log flag instead of Old Glory.
Indiana has a red flag law and a “Jake Laird” law, too. The latter was passed (overwhelmingly even in this hyper-GOP state) in ‘04 or’05. The law permits law enforcement to remove firearms from the possession of for a more extended time than typical red flag laws. It’s named for Laird because he was the a cop who confronted a shooter who was firing “randomly” with an assault style rifle and was shot dead for his trouble. The shooter was a deranged individual whose firearm(s) were returned to him a few months after a red flag confiscation. The FedEx shooter’s new shotgun was also confiscated via Laird after he told his parents that he longed for a “suicide by cop” event. Nevertheless, he recently bought two assault style rifles legally, one on each of two occasions, and used them Thursday night.

It’s something of an irony that the latest mass shooting took place in a FedEx building, considering that carrier is a staunch supporter of the NRA.

How nice and convenient — the American flag as blotting paper disposable napkin.
