I clicked like because I like that Steve Benson calls attention to this tragic but important story. But I am sad for it, as I’m sure Benson also is.
In the age of Trump, those who carry the flags of the KKKonfederacy and Nazis — literally the flags of slavery, oppression and genocide that REAL AMERICANS crushed in World War II and the Civil War respectively — feel emboldened.
They march openly in Charlottesville and the fake “president” defends them. A Coast Guard lieutenant and former Marine is found to have a massive arsenal and a detailed plan to assassinate PROgressives and the fake “president” is silent.
And a major newspaper editor calls for a rebirth of the “Birth of a Nation” (D.W. Griffith’s epic tribute to the Ku Klux Klan as the ”nation” referenced) and, again, the fake “president” is silent.
And the father who implies he would drown his children if he found out they were gay. Yet I’m sure he considers himself a loving Jesus follower.https://nowthisnews.com/videos/politics/lawmaker-eric-porterfield-likens-lgbtq-activists-to-kkk
I’ve always wondered about the irony of symbols. Burn an American flag, and knickers get tightly twisted across the board. Burn a cross, and it gets some offended lip-service but no real condemnation. And as often as not, the silence is deafening.
There are just enough nutcases out there that are energized by the alt-right rhetoric to be a significant danger. Twice Comet Pizza has be threatened by such people, one with a gun and one arsonist, and now we have a major nutcase here in Maryland. White nationalism has become a defining characteristic of Trump and the alt-Right.
“A U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant and self-identified white nationalist was arrested after federal investigators uncovered a cache of weapons and ammunition in his Maryland home that authorities say he stockpiled to launch a widespread domestic terrorist attack targeting politicians and journalists.”
Nice imaginative work on the "A"s in “ALABAMA”. I think we readers so often get caught up in the political message that we fail to appreciate the creativity in the artwork.
Steve, As an aside, I find it quite amusing that you are placed right next to Lisa Bensen. The normal disparity in content and truth makes for a good laugh.

Well, Democrats are pretty horrible people – with all their trying to get people healthcare, living wages, and affordable education.

Today’s easy question for political beginners: “Who’s the real victim here?” Is it …
(1) Brett Kavanaugh
(2) Jussie Smollett
(3) Ralph Northam
(4) Goodloe Sutton
(5) Jayme Closs

The saddest part about this (other than the low-life that penned the editorial) is that the Smollett incident gets 50x the press that this does!

I appreciate your message, Mr. Benson, but this is the most cringe-inducing cartoon I’ve seen in a long time.
Cue Billie Holliday (or more recently, Cassandra Wilson) singing “Strange Fruit”.

Since the KKK was created by the Democrats it seems a bit of biting the hand that feeds you. Alabama just doesn’t surprise me any more.
